“The absolute best way to discover the new music I like. I love getting this weekly Substack from Ventipop. Not many people dare to feature the bands I want to know about. Friday FF RW saves me so much time searching for news about the music I love.” ~ James Richards - Newark, New Jersey

This was a very strong week for new album releases. We have new records today by the incomparable Brandy Clark, the “how are they this underrated?” Sunglasses For Jaws, the completely out-there band Mandy, Indiana, the zany Australian Alex Lahey, the always inventive Sufjan Stevens, the beautifully melodic musings of The Milk Carton Kids and the always surprising songs of Jealous of the Birds.
Brandy Clark - BRANDY CLARK
Jealous Of The Birds - HINTERLAND
Mandy, Indiana - I’VE SEEN A WAY
The Milk Carton Kids - I ONLY SEE THE MOON
Sunglasses For Jaws - A ROOM IN EUROPE
Alex Lahey - THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS YES
Sufjan Stevens - REFLECTIONS
1957 - Elvis Presley was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital after inhaling a porcelain cap from one of his front teeth, lodging in one of his lungs.
1962 - Less than three months before her death, Marilyn Monroe made one of her last public appearances at President John F. Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration, where she famously sang "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" in his honor.
1963 - Relative newcomers Bob Dylan and Joan Baez appeared with Pete Seeger at the first Monterey Folk Festival.
1974 - Ray Stevens' "The Streak" hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
1982 - Stevie Wonder and Paul McCartney started a seven-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Ebony And Ivory." The song gave McCartney his 24th U.S. No. 1 as a songwriter. My favorite version of the song:
1986 - Run-DMC released their third album, Raising Hell, featuring the groundbreaking rap reworking of "Walk This Way." The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B Albums chart as the first hip hop/rap album to do so, and at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, and in 2018, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or artistically significant." The album also features hits "It's Tricky", "My Adidas" and "You Be Illin'".
1990 - Madonna started a three-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with “Vogue.” Originally planned as a B-side, it became the singer's eighth U.S. No. 1 and seventh U.K. No. 1 hit.
1995 - Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and Little Richard shared the stage for the first time ever at a concert in Sheffield, England.
1998 - Frank Sinatra passed away at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles at age 82, after a heart attack. Sinatra had his first hit in 1940, working in the Swing era with Harry James and Tommy Dorsey. He went on to score more than 25 Top 40 singles, including the 1966 No. 1 "Strangers In The Night."
2013 - Eight years in the making, Daft Punk's fourth album, Random Access Memories, featured guest appearances from a range of artists including Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams. It became their first U.S. chart-topper, propelled by the massive worldwide hit single (and Nile Rodgers collaboration) "Get Lucky."
2015 - Blues singer, songwriter and guitarist B.B. King died in his sleep at age 89 from a series of small strokes caused by type 2 diabetes.
2016 - Moby released his memoir "Porcelain," named because he threw up into a lot of porcelain toilets.
2017 - 52-year-old singer, songwriter, and grunge icon Chris Cornell took his own life while on tour. Known best as the frontman for Soundgarden, the Seattle-born artist was a force in the local rock scene, beginning in the mid-80s. In 1994, Soundgarden rose to international fame with their fourth album, Superunknown, which featured their signature hit, “Black Hole Sun.” Beyond Soundgarden, the three-time Grammy winner enjoyed a successful solo career, while he was also the frontman and founder of Temple of the Dog (with members of Pearl Jam) and served as the lead vocalist in the supergroup Audioslave.
