Writing About Music...Dancing About Architecture
Friday/FF/RW #15 :: Featuring new & old music this week by Miya Folick, Charley Crockett, Tina Turner, Ella Fitzgerald, decker., Teenage Fanclub, Depeche Mode & Jealous of the Birds
Press Play on another edition of Ventipop’s Friday Fast Forward Rewind. There’s and old quote out there that says, “Writing about music is like dancing about architecture” and it’s one I truly believe. So, you may have noticed…I don’t really write too much about how songs make me feel or what certain songs sound like or what they make me think about because honestly, my opinion is never going to jive with whatever a song makes you think or feel. That’s the real beauty of music. We hear what we each hear and the affectation of every song on us as individuals depends completely on our own experiences or even what our mood is in that particular moment we click play. So instead of convincing listeners a song is worth hearing based on my words, I ask my readers/listeners to trust me. I have no grand illusion everyone will love every song I pick. I only hope you find at least one new favorite artist or track every Friday. Now, on to the music…
TEENAGE FANCLUB :: “FOREIGN LAND”
JEALOUS OF THE BIRDS :: “BEGINNER’S LUCK”
DECKER. :: “SUPERNOVAE”
MIYA FOLICK :: “DRUGS OR PEOPLE”
CHARLEY CROCKETT:: “I’M JUST A CLOWN”
My top releases this week:
Miya Folick - ROACH
Gia Margaret - ROMANTIC PIANO
Kevin Morby - MORE PHOTOGRAPHS
Eydis Evensen - THE LIGHT
Charley Crockett - THE MAN FROM WACO REDUX
Arlo Parks - MY SOFT MACHINE
1962 - The original "Twist and Shout" by the Isley Brothers was released. Less than nine months later, the Beatles covered it for their first album.
1964 - Ella Fitzgerald became the first artist to have a hit with a Beatles cover when "Can't Buy Me Love" entered the UK chart.
1968 - Simon and Garfunkel scored their second U.S. No. 1 album with Bookends. The album featured four U.S. singles: "A Hazy Shade of Winter," "At the Zoo," "Fakin' It" and "Mrs. Robinson."
1969 - The Who released their fourth album Tommy, which was the first album to be billed as a rock opera. The album went on to reach No. 4 on the album chart and sell 2 million copies in the U.S.
1977 - Kiss provided Marvel Comics with a vial of their blood to be mixed with the red ink used to print their upcoming comic book. The photo op took place at the printing plant in Depew, New York, where the comic was made.
1990 - For the first time ever, the top five positions on the U.S. singles chart were held by female artists: Madonna was at No. 1 with "Vogue," Heart were at No. 2 with "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You," Sinead O'Connor was at No. 3 with her cover of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U," Wilson Phillips were at No. 4 with "Hold On," and Janet Jackson was at No. 5 with "Alright.”
1992 - Boyz II Men were touring as the opening act for MC Hammer's 2 Legit 2 Quit Tour when their manager, Khalil Rountree, was murdered by three gunmen at a Chicago hotel.
1994 - Michael Jackson married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley. The couple divorced in 1995.
2004 - In a letter to fans, Phish frontman Trey Anastasio said that after 21 years together, the band was splitting up. "We all love and respect Phish and the Phish audience far too much to stand by and allow it to drag on beyond the point of vibrancy and health. We don't want to become caricatures of ourselves, or worse yet, a nostalgia act." They wrapped things up with a show in Coventry, Vermont, in August, but it was not the final curtain. In 2009, the band reunited.
2008 - Forty-two years after releasing his first album, Neil Diamond scored his first No. 1 when Home Before Dark topped the albums chart.
2022 - Depeche Mode keyboardist Andy Fletcher died age 60. Fletcher was a founding member of the band which found success with their dark electronic sound and hits including 'Personal Jesus'. My all-time favorite Depeche Mode song is “Waiting for the Night”:
