1939 - Mary Isobel Catherine Bernadette O'Brien, also known as Dusty Springfield, was born. With a career that extended from the late 1950s to the 1990s, she had six top 20 singles on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and sixteen on the U.K. Singles Chart including "What Have I Done To Deserve This?", "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", "Wishin' And Hopin'", and "Son-Of-A Preacher Man". Springfield passed away from breast cancer in 1999 at age 59.
1959 - Goldband Records released 'Puppy Love' by a 13-year-old Dolly Parton in the US, a song that was recorded two years earlier when she was just eleven years old. The song didn't chart.
1971 - The Beatles won their only Oscar, taking home Best Original Song Score for their movie Let It Be.
1980 - Blondie hit No. 1 in the U.S. with "Call Me," which is featured in the Richard Gere movie American Gigolo.
1987 - A record store in Callaway, Fla., was forced to close down and a part-time clerk was arrested after selling a copy of 2 Live Is What We Are by 2 Live Crew to a 14-year-old boy. Officials had deemed the recording obscene because of its explicit lyrics.
1990 - Sinead O’Connor started a four-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with her version of the Prince song 'Nothing Compares To You'. The track was also a No.1 hit in 18 other countries. The video won Best Video at the 1990 MTV Video Music Awards - the first video by a female artist to win in this category.
2003 - Nina Simone died at age 70 after a long battle with breast cancer.
2004 - Jennifer Hudson gets voted off season three of American Idol, where she finishes in seventh place.
2012 - American Bandstand host Dick Clark died of a heart attack at age 82.
2016 - Prince was found dead at his home in Minnesota at the age of 57, after Police were summoned to his Paisley Park estate and found his body in a lift.
2022 -Three independent artists - Wet Leg, Father John Misty and Jack White - took the top positions in the UK albums chart for the first time in more than 11 years. Wet Leg, the Isle of Wight indie duo, went in at No.1 with their eponymous debut. They managed to outsell the rest of the top five combined in the process.
