1949 - RCA Victor introduced the 45rpm single record, which had been in development since 1940. Advertisements for new record players boasted that with 45rpm records, the listener could hear up to ten records with speedy, silent, hardly noticeable changes.
1958 - Chuck Berry's rock 'n' roll classic 'Johnny B. Goode' single was released. The song's original lyrics referred to Johnny as a 'colored boy', but Berry later acknowledged that he changed it to 'country boy' to ensure radio play.
1963 - 16-year-old Lesley Gore recorded her breakthrough hit, 'It's My Party'. The song produced by Quincy Jones went on to be a US No.1
1974 - John Denver went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Sunshine On My Shoulders," the singer's first of four U.S. No. 1 hits.
1980 - Pink Floyd’s 1973 LP, The Dark Side Of The Moon notched up a record-setting 303 continuous weeks on the US album chart, eclipsing the previous record held by Carole King’s 1971 chart-topper, Tapestry. The album remained in the chart for an unparalleled 736 nonconsecutive weeks, from March 17, 1973, to July 16, 1988.
1981 - Blondie scored their fourth No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Rapture.” Their 20th single, which appeared on the album Autoamerican, spent two weeks at the top spot and broke ground as the first No.1 hit in the US to feature a rap section.
1987 - Prince released his broadly acclaimed ninth studio album, Sign o’ the Times, which marked his first LP without his band, The Revolution.
