NEW MUSIC :: FRIDAY JUNE 09, 2023
Friday/FF/RW #17 :: Featuring new & old music this week by Christine and the Queens, DOPE MELON, Johnny Cash, Jess Williamson, Cyndi Lauper, Lightning Dust and Girl and Girl
Press Play on another edition of Ventipop’s Friday Fast Forward Rewind. This week I have my five favorite new songs from an eclectic mix of artists. The chill laidback vibes of DOPE MELON, the country-tinged strumming of Jess Williamson, the techno-laced Christine and the Queens, the fuzzy-infused Girl and Girl, and folksy-indie rock of Lightning Dust.
DOPE LEMON :: “KIMOSABÉ”
CHRISTINE AND THE QUEENS :: “FULL OF LIFE”
JESS WILLIAMSON :: “TIME AIN’T ACCIDENTAL”
LIGHTNING DUST :: “RAPIDS AND RIVERS”
GIRL AND GIRL :: “DIVORCE 1”

1953 - Elvis Presley graduated from J.C. Hulmes High School in Memphis; his graduation photo shows him to have a split curl in the middle of his forehead, which later became his trademark. Elvis was the first member of his family to graduate high school.
1954 - Elvis Presley recorded "Blue Moon of Kentucky" (the B-side for his first single) at Sun Studio in Memphis, Tenn. Presley had recorded the A-side "That's Alright" four days earlier.
1956 - Following a June 30 riot at a rock concert featuring Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers in Asbury Park, N.J., Bill Haley and His Comets were denied permission to play at the Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City. A city ordinance was passed that read: "Rock and roll music encourages juvenile delinquency and inspires young females in lewd bathing suits to perform obscene dances on the city's beaches."
1958 - Johnny Cash signed to Columbia Records, where he remained for the next 30 years and released more than 60 albums. Here’s one of the best videos ever made:
1963 - The Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. singles chart. Phil Spector produced the track, and among the backing musicians was Glen Campbell on guitar.
1969 - The first episode of The Johnny Cash Show premiered live from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell were both guests.
1972 - Bruce Springsteen signed with Columbia Records. He would release his debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park the following January.
1974 - Dolly Parton was at No.1 on the US country chart with 'I Will Always Love You'. Elvis Presley indicated that he wanted to cover the song. Parton was interested until Presley's manager, Colonel Tom Parker, told her that it was standard procedure for the songwriter to sign over half of the publishing rights to any song Elvis recorded. Parton refused.
1977 - Elvis Costello quit his job at Elizabeth Arden Cosmetics to become a full-time musician.
1983 - The Police started an eight-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Every Breath You Take."
1984 - Cyndi Lauper scored her first No.1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Time After Time.”
1985 - Tears For Fears started a two-week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with 'Everybody Wants To Rule The World', the group's first US No.1. In 1986, the song won Best Single at the Brit Awards. Band member and co-writer Roland Orzabal argued that the song deserved to win the Ivor Novello International Hit of the Year award, claiming that the winner, '19' by Paul Hardcastle - was not an actual song, but only a "dialogue collage."
1987 - Heart released their ninth album, Bad Animals, which like their previous album, used outside songwriters. The big hit from the disc was the No. 1 ballad "Alone," written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly.
2008 - Rolling Stone magazine published a list of the Top 50 guitar songs of all time. No.5 was 'Brown Sugar' by The Rolling Stones, No.4 , ‘You Really Got Me’ by The Kinks, No.3, ‘Crossroads’, by Cream, No.2 ‘Purple Haze’, by Jimi Hendrix and No.1 ‘Johnny B Goode’, Chuck Berry.
2019 - Forbes declares Jay-Z a billionaire, making him the first rapper to hit that mark. ($310 million of his fortune came from his stake in Armand de Brignac champagne.)
2020 - Bonnie Pointer died from a cardiac arrest at age 69. She and her sisters rose to fame as the Grammy-winning Pointer Sisters, who were best-known for the 1984 hits 'Jump (For My Love)' and 'I'm So Excited'.
