Press Play on another edition of Ventipop’s Friday Fast Forward Rewind. Instead of convincing listeners a song is worth hearing based on my words, I ask my readers/listeners to trust me. I have no grand illusion everyone will love every song I pick. I only hope you find at least one new favorite artist or track every Friday. Now, on to the music…
COWBOY JUNKIES :: “BLUE SKIES”
HANNAH GEORGAS :: “BETTER SOMEHOW”
ANI DIFRANCO & TUNE-YARDS :: “LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE (REMIX)”
KELLY CLARKSON & STEVE MARTIN :: “I HATE LOVE”
BULLY :: “ALL I DO”
Numerous releases out this week from…shall we say “vintage” artists…who've been putting out great music for decades, from Bob Dylan and Foo Fighters to Tanya Tucker, Cowboy Junkies and more. Here are my top releases this week:
Cowboy Junkies - SUCH FEROCIOUS BEAUTY
Ben Folds - WHAT MATTERS MOST
Foo Fighters - BUT HERE WE ARE
Bully - LUCKY FOR YOU
Ruen Brothers - TEN PACES
Pupil Slicer - BLOSSOM
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds - COUNCIL SKIES
1969 - The Plastic Ono Band recorded "Give Peace a Chance" during a 'bed-in' at the Hotel La Reine in Montreal. Producer Phil Spector, poet Allan Ginsberg and writer Timothy Leary all sang on the song.
1977 - The BBC announced a ban on the new Sex Pistols single "God Save The Queen," saying it was "in gross bad taste.”
1977 - Elvis walked off stage in the middle of a show in Baltimore. It was the first time in his 23-year career that he had done so except when legitimately ill. The end was near.
1983 - Actress and singer Irene Cara started a six-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Flashdance...What A Feeling".
1987 - U2's concert in Rome was so loud that it set off earthquake alarms. One of the most underrated U2 songs is “The Unforgettable Fire”. Look at how young they were:
1994 - After a 14-year hiatus, the Eagles reunited for a show in Burbank, California, closing the show with "Desperado." They soon launched their Hell Freezes Over Tour, which became the first tour to charge more than $100 for a substantial number of tickets.
1997 - Singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley disappeared during a spontaneous evening swim in the Mississippi River outside Memphis. His body was found on June 4, 1997 after being spotted by a passenger on a tourist riverboat.
2000 - The White Stripes performed on TV for the first time, playing "Apple Blossom" and "You're Pretty Good Looking" on the Detroit Public Television series Backstage Pass.
2006 - Red Hot Chili Peppers started a two-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Stadium Arcadium, the band's ninth studio album.
2017 - Thanks to the song by Eminem, the word "stan" was added to the Oxford American Dictionary, defined as "an overzealous or obsessive fan of a particular celebrity."
ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL RENDITIONS OF “STAND BY ME”…
Tracy Chapman’s voice is so pure and perfect for this Ben E. King classic
