Here are the new album releases I’m most looking forward to this week:
The National - FIRST TWO PAGES OF FRANKENSTEIN
Josh Ritter - SPECTRAL LINES
Tiny Ruins - CEREMONY
Joy Oladokun - PROOF OF LIFE
The Orb - PRISM
Neil Gaiman & FourPlay String Quartet - SIGNS OF LIFE
The Last Dinner Party have shared their highly anticipated debut single ‘Nothing Matters’. Introducing the single on Instagram, the band wrote: “Thank you to everyone who has joined us on this journey so far, and to anyone who is new, welcome, take a seat at the dinner party. The feast is finally served.” Can’t wait to feed on more from this London-based force of nature.
Here are my five favorite songs unearthed this week:
THE LAST DINNER PARTY :: “NOTHING MATTERS”
BEES IN A BOTTLE :: “WET WIDOW”
HANNAH GEORGAS :: “BEAUTIFUL VIEW”
SPANISH LOVE SONGS :: “NOW IT’S ON”
THE NATIONAL w/ SUFJAN STEVENS :: “ONCE UPON A POOLSIDE”
1957 - Elvis Presley had his custom-built 'Music Gates' installed at Graceland. The gates were designed by Abe Saucer and made by John Dillars Jr, of Memphis Doors Inc.
1961 - Bob Dylan appeared on Harry Belafonte's album The Midnight Special, playing harmonica on the title track. Dylan was paid a $50 session fee for this his first-ever recording.
1961 - Del Shannon started a four-week run at No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with "Runaway".
1968 - The Beatles' new company, Apple Records, turned down an offer to sign a new artist by the name of David Bowie.
1978 - John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd performed as the Blues Brothers for the first time on Saturday Night Live, opening the show with "Hey Bartender."
1979 - Blondie's Heart Of Glass hit No. 1.
1983 - "Come On Eileen" by Dexys Midnight Runners went to No. 1 in the U.S. It was the only American hit for the English group.
1990 - Guns N' Roses singer Axl Rose married girlfriend Erin Everly, daughter of The Everly Brothers' Don Everly at the Cupid Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. Their marriage was annulled in January 1991.
2003 - Apple launched iTunes, which becomes the first widely-successful legal music download site, thanks to the emergence of the iPod portable music player. At first, the service was available only to Mac users, and the music files were encoded in Apple's proprietary format restricting where they could be played.
2006 - Billy Joel became the first non-athlete to earn a banner at Madison Square Garden when he sold out the venue for the 12th time on his tour. His #12 hangs alongside retired greats who played in the Garden like Willis Reed, Walt Frazier and Mark Messier.
2016 - Bruce Springsteen saluted the recently deceased Prince by opening his show in Brooklyn with "Purple Rain". The E Street Band wore purple for the show, deviating from their usual black.
I USUALLY DISLIKE COVERS BUT METALLICA TOTALLY NAILS THEIR RENDITION OF BOB SEGER’S “TURN THE PAGE”….
