"Can't Breathe with Such A View..."
Friday/FF/RW #8 :: Featuring new and old music this week from NF, Iraina Mancini, Paris Paloma, Your Best Nightmare, Wild Child, The Troggs and nearly every artist from my childhood.
My must-hear album of the week is definitely THE FOOLER by LA artist Nick Waterhouse. Insert label here: “throwback”, “retro”, “musical time traveler”…whatever. It’s all appropriate. Yes, the new record is part rockabilly part cool orchestral bluesy rock, and yet this new album is also contemplative and reflective on a deeper level lyrically. It’s like having a serious conversation while a party goes on in the background.
Here are all the new albums I’ll have in rotation this week at Ventipop Headquarters:
NICK WATERHOUSE - The Fooler
NF - Hope
BLONDSHELL - Blondshell EP
WEDNESDAY - Rat Saw God
WORRIERS - Warm Blanket
MUDHONEY - Plastic Eternity
VENTIPOP’S FAVORITE 20 SONGS OF MARCH PLAYLIST IS AVAILABLE NOW
This week was by far the most difficult to narrow down to five songs since I began this Substack eight weeks ago. I’m not gonna lie, I’m kind of hoping next week’s releases sorta suck so I can cram in another five songs I loved from this week.
NF :: “HOPE”
IRAINA MANCINI :: “CANNONBALL”
PARIS PALOMA :: “LABOUR”
YOUR BEST NIGHTMARE :: “REALLY CUTE”
WILD CHILD :: “WEARING BLUE”
1958 - The first "Greatest Hits" compilation is released, and it's by Johnny Mathis. It's a huge hit, and the format catches on quickly. The Mathis album stays in the Billboard 200 album chart for over 9 years, a record not broken until Pink Floyd's Dark Side Of The Moon.
1964 - Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" single goes #1 & stays #1 for 5 weeks
1966 - The Troggs recorded 'Wild Thing' at Regent Sound Studio in London. The song was a No.1 US and No.2 UK hit in June of the following year. The track was recorded in one complete take (take two).
1968 - Simon and Garfunkel went to No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with The Graduate.
1973 - The Elvis Presley Aloha From Hawaii concert, recorded three months earlier, is broadcast in America for the first time when it runs on NBC. The ratings are huge, with a third of households with TV sets tuning in to watch.
1980 - R.E.M. played their first-ever gig when they appeared at St Mary's Episcopal Church, Athens, Georgia.
1984 - Marvin Gaye was fatally shot by his father at his parents' home in Los Angeles.
1985 - At 3:50 pm GMT, 5,000 radio stations worldwide played the benefit single "We Are The World" simultaneously.
1994 - Kurt Cobain of Nirvana committed suicide by firearm at his home in Seattle. Strangely, like Jimi, Janis, Jim Morrison and Brian Jones, he was 27 when he died.
2008 - Apple's iTunes overtook Wal-Mart to become the largest music retailer in the US.
2020 - John Prine died at age 73 due to complications from Covid-19. He released his debut album in 1971, and put out a total of 19 studio albums.
