French 79 - TEENAGERS
Josie Cotton - DAY OF THE GUN (“Johnny Are You Queer Boy” singer from the ‘80’s)

Been listening to about 240 new songs today so sorry for the late post. The more popular this Substack becomes the more submissions I get. I narrowed it down to these five. I hope you hear something you like.
Here are my five favorite songs unearthed this week:
SID SIMONS :: “TOY GUN”
DREW HOLCOMB & THE NEIGHBORS :: “THAT’S ON YOU, THAT’S ON ME”
EILEN JEWELL :: “OUTSIDERS”
KEVIN MORBY :: “THIS IS A PHOTOGRAPH II”
POLICE DOG HOGAN :: “ONE LAST TRIP AROUND THE SUN”
1956 - Elvis Presley concurrently scored his first US No.1 single and album with “Heartbreak Hotel” and his self-titled debut, respectively. Released as Presley’s first single with the label RCA Victor, “Heartbreak Hotel” was recorded in Nashville with his band The Blue Moon Boys, guitarist Chet Atkins, and pianist Floyd Cramer.
1967 - Aretha Franklin's classic version of Otis Redding's "Respect" was released. Franklin's version is so definitive that most people assume she was the first to record the song.
1967 - Pink Floyd appeared at The Moulin Rouge, Ainsdale, Southport, England. The promotion flyers for the club said: 'The Moulin Rouge night club. Wine, Dine, Dance! And have a gay time'.
1970 - Four students at Kent State University were killed and 11 wounded by National Guard troops at a campus demonstration protesting the escalation of the Vietnam War. The incident inspired Neil Young to compose "Ohio," which became a hit for Crosby Stills Nash & Young.
1977 - Led Zeppelin broke the world record for the number of people attending a rock concert when 76,229 people saw them play the Pontiac Silverdome in Michigan.
1980 - The South African government banned Pink Floyd's single 'Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2)' after black children adopted the song as their anthem in protest against inferior education.
1980 - Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band started a six-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with 'Against The Wind'. One of many favorite Bob Seger songs:
1984 - Duran Duran was No.1 on the UK singles chart with 'The Reflex', the group's second and last No.1.
1991 - Nirvana began recording their sophomore album, Nevermind, at Southern California’s Sound City Studios. With producer Butch Vig at the helm and a budget of $65,000, the grunge pioneers would soon make history with their era-defining album.
1992 - Radiohead released 'The Drill EP', their first record in the UK. The band was still called "On a Friday" when the songs for this EP were recorded; they changed their name to Radiohead the following month.
2005 - Coldplay became the first British band to have a new entry in the U.S. Top 10 singles chart since The Beatles.
2005 - The last Pink Floyd concert that included both Gilmour and Waters occurred in London in July 2005 at the Live 8 benefit. Watch this epic and impressive cover of “The Wall”. Labeled as the "Biggest Rock Band in Central Europe," filmed in 2021 in Hungary, this City Rocks flash mob consisted of over 400 musicians and children’s choirs:
2012 - Adam Yauch, founding member of the Beastie Boys, died of cancer aged 47. The Beastie Boys played their first show on Yauch's 17th birthday.
2016 - Prince's albums re-entered the UK Top 40 as a result of huge public interest in his back catalog following his death earlier in the month. Six of Prince’s singles re-entered the UK Top 100, with “Purple Rain” hitting No. 6. In the US during the same week, Prince established a chart record in The Billboard 200 by simultaneously placing five albums in the Top 10.
Harry Belafonte, legendary singer, activist, and actor passed away on April 25th. This clip of artists paying an impromptu tribute to him following the recording of “We Are The World” hits home and brought a tear to my eye.
SO LONG HARRY…
